The Heart of the Valley YMCA’s Youth in Government program had an impressive performance at the 74th Youth Legislature in Montgomery, AL. Five delegates from Decatur High School and Hartselle High School participated with over 400 other high school students in the hands-on three-day conference where students presented bills on a topic of their choice and took it through the legislative process. Elections, debates and fellowship made this experience both educational and life-changing.
Congratulations to the entire team: Alan Moguel, Velinda Dionicio, Elizabeth Roman, Mary Francis Itsede, and Tyler Peek.
Three of our first year delegates walked away with awards.
Velinda Dionicio: Chosen as the top First Year delegate in the state! She was also chosen as an alternate (the only 1st year student) for the National International Affairs Forum this summer.
Mary Francis Itsede: Awarded Outstanding Delegate
Tyler Peek: Awarded Outstanding Delegate
We are also proud to share that Alan Moguel will attend as one of two of Alabama’s representatives for the YMCA National Youth Advocacy Summit in Washington, D.C. in June.
