The Y Makes Safety around Water a Priority with SPLASH Program

News | Jennifer Dykes | September 8, 2017

SPLASH water safety education at the Hogan Family YMCA looks like so much fun, it may not be apparent that the Madison third-graders being flipped out of boats or tossing pool noodles to friends are actually reducing their risk of death by drowning. It’s a sad fact that two children every day die from drowning in the U.S., and in 88% of these cases, an adult was present.

Heart of the Valley YMCA showcased SPLASH at a Media Day on Sept. 6 at the Hogan Y. The Y began the SPLASH program in 2006 at the Southeast Family YMCA. SPLASH was launched at the Hogan YMCA in 2011, and to date more than 4,700 Madison children have participated in the SPLASH program.
