Bell Power Scholars Academy is a five-week summer learning program designed to help advance students’ academic achievement through a full day of challenging math and reading instruction, fun arts, science and STEM enrichment activities, field trips, and a healthy breakfast, snack and lunch. The Heart of the Valley YMCA conducted two programs this summer at New Market Elementary School and Guntersville Elementary School.
All children have potential, but some may need additional support to reach it. Research shows that children from underserved and low-income households often start school underprepared and fall behind their peers resulting in an achievement gap. Through focused programming and support, the YMCA is committed to closing this gap.
Power Scholars Academy has proven its efficacy at combatting summer learning loss. In 2021, students participating in the program gained more than three months of knowledge in reading and two and a half months in math. Additional PSA partners include the 21st Century Community Learning Center, Madison County Schools, Friends of New Market, and Guntersville City Schools.
