Making Safety Around Water a Priority

Third Graders get a splash of water smarts and fun in their school days

Haley, a third-grader at West Madison Elementary, is apprehensive about entering the pool at the Hogan Family YMCA during her school’s SPLASH Water Safety Education class. Swim Instructor Shari Purlee uses a variety of techniques to increase the comfort level of children who are non-swimmers as well as provide them with skills to self-rescue or safely help a friend. This August and September, the Heart of the Valley YMCA SPLASH program will teach more than 670 third-graders in Madison City Schools to be safe in and around the water, at water parks, at the beach and at home. The Heart of the Valley YMCA provides this program free to help prevent death by drowning in children.
