Safeguarding Our Health

The Heart of the Valley YMCA is deeply committed to safeguarding the health of our Members and Staff. As we monitor developments in the potential spread of COVID-19 in Alabama, we want to keep you informed about what the Y is doing locally to prevent the spread of coronavirus in our community and how you can help. The web site coronavirus.gov is the best source for useful information about COVID-19.

What You Can Do

We can all do our part to prevent the spread of illness in our Y and in our community:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Thoroughly wipe down exercise equipment with wipes and disposable towels provided at the Y before and after using.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

What the Y Is Doing

At your Y, you can expect to see our staff cleaning frequently touched surfaces more often, including doorknobs, exercise equipment, phones, banisters and handrails. We have examined our cleaning solutions to ensure that they are capable of destroying viruses. We have placed additional cleaning stations around our facilities dispensing hand sanitizer, and also providing spray solution and disposable wipes. We have plenty of soap and water in our restrooms and locker rooms.

The Y frequently sanitizes Child Watch and child care rooms. Please note that the YMCA has guidelines that do not allow children who are currently ill to attend Child Watch or child care.

The Y remains open to serve our community at this time. Any facility closures will be made in accordance with guidelines from the Alabama Department of Public Health and local health departments. The Y will push facility and program information out via our social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn); via push notifications through our Mobile App; through e-mails to Members; and in our facilities.

What We Know About COVID-19

The web site coronavirus.gov provides the most up-to-date information about the respiratory disease. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Thank you for helping keep our Ys healthy and safe!
